Which Browser?

Q. What is a web browser?
A. a web browser is a piece of software on your computer. It lets you visit webpages and use web applications. A web browser is not a search engine, you use the browser to access a search engine on the internet.

Q. Which is the best web browser?
A. The easy answer to that is - which ever one you feel most comfortable with.

That may be a little vague, but there are many free web browsers for you to choose from and, as a web developer who uses all the main browsers, i find they all have their good points.

Microsoft Internet Explorer - The latest release is Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), which is available as a free update for Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Windows XP users can install Internet Explorer 8.

Mozilla Firefox - Popular with developers due to its ease of use and add-ons. User's are able to add their own colour's or themes to the browser.

Google Chrome - aims to improve security, speed, and stability. Chrome has minimalistic user interface. Makes use of the Play store to allow user to install Apps to the browser home page.

Apple Safari - Clean, crisp interface. Windows users can install version 5 of Safari (XP service pack 2, Vista Windows 7), however any plans to release newer versions for Windows seems unlikely at the time of writing - more information ».

These are just a few of the web browsers available and they share many things in common such as tabbed browsing and private browsing. You will, no doubt, hear good things and bad things about all of these browsers, so the best advice is to try them, see which one suits your style of browsing. The are all free, and if you dont get on with a particular one, they are easy to remove from your computer.

The most important thing to remember is to keep your browser up to date. Updates to security and improvments to speed are released regularly. If you are using an old browser, now is the time to update!
